Description (Information gained on ATR Website http://www.atraircraft.com):

Increased Performance for the ATR 42

To answer operators' increasing requirements for additional performance and comfort on their short-haul routes, ATR developed the ATR 42-500 as the first member of its new-generation aircraft family.

The ATR 42-500 is fitted with the 2,400-shp. Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127E engines, providing a cruise speed of 300 kts.

The engines drive new Hamilton Standard/Ratier-Figeac 568F six-blade propellers with a reduced diameter, lower rotation speed and advanced tip design that reduce the noise and vibration transmitted to the passenger cabin. A Propeller Electronic Control system and Propeller Valve Module provides very accurate rotational speed while maintaining optimum synchrophasing between the two propellers -- resulting in extremely low vibration levels.

Passenger comfort

ATR's new interior design was introduced on the ATR 42-500, with a completely reworked and extensively soundproofed passenger cabin. Steps taken to reduce noise include the installation of new "damped" dynamic vibration absorbers, acoustically-absorbent materials and better acoustic treatment of parasitic noise sources such as hydraulic pumps and outflow valves.

The new-look interior offers 40 percent more volume in the overhead storage bins, with each bin unit sized at 2 meters long for outsized carry-on baggage. These features give the ATR 42-500 the highest carry-on volume per passenger in its class.

ATR's new interior for the ATR 42-500 provides improvements for what always has been an excellent passenger cabin. ATR's cabin cross-section was designed from the start for passenger comfort -- with the 17.3-inch width of seats being wider than a standard economy class seat on the Boeing 737. The bilobed fuselage shape provides spacious legroom for passengers in aisle seats as well as in the window seat, while also increasing the amount of underseat baggage space.

The cabin redesign on the new-generation ATR 42-500 enhances the feeling of space, with clean flowing lines and careful attention to cabin lighting. The careful integration of passenger service units -- which incorporate individual reading lights, air outlets, cabin crew call button, loudspeakers and passenger signs -- into the bottom of the overhead storage bin adds to the cabin's attractiveness.

Passenger and cabin crew movement through the cabin is aided by the 18-inch-wide aisle and the handrail that is integrated into the overhead storage bin.

Maximum takeoff weight of the ATR 42-500 is increased to 18.6 metric tons, allowing a payload growth to 5,450 kg. and a range of more than 1,000 km.

The ATR 42-500 has improved performance when operating from hot-and-high runways, but maintains the operating economics and reliability of the ATR 42 family.

Revenue service with the ATR 42-500 began in October, 1995.
