Pilots Report of flight TCA1040 from Hilo to Beijing.

It was once again a nice day on Hawaii Island as we drove to the airport, were briefed on the weather en-route and collected our papers and headed out to our B747-400. Aircraft today would be PJ-TYB our 'Empress of Africa' and we will have a passengers count of 376 plus 7865 kg of cargo bound for Beijing.
After the walk around I headed into the cockpit, where my co-pilot and first officer for this flight today, Stefan Winter, had already set up the FMC with all the required data for the flight. At a ZFW of 227.4 tonnes and a block fuel of 133 tonnes we were expecting a TOW of 359.4 tonnes. we selected flaps-20 and a de-rated TO thrust for an assumed temperature of 39°C. Our v-speeds were V1 146, Vr 160 and V2 174.
At 01:59 Zulu time we were pushed back and started the engines, configured the aircraft as we taxied to RWY 08 and finally lined up onto the runway and set takeoff power. Initial acceleration was good and so the v-speeds passed by and we gently lifted off from the runway following the PARIS3 departure. We climbed to 5000 feet and later into the flight got several clearances to FL320, which would be our initial cruising altitude on this flight. But shortly after departure and into the initial climb we already had the impression that something wasn't working correctly as the aircraft hunted left and right to catch every single waypoint. We tried several things and worked the check-lists, but nothing helped. So we declared PAN and requested to divert to Honolulu, but dump fuel before the landing. We entered a holding at ALANA intersection at 15000 feet and dumped fuel for about 40-45 minutes.
[attachment=1789]

The overhead panel during the fuel dump:
[attachment=1790]

Here you can see the B744 flying off track (to the left), but at the correct heading. 9 more tons of fuel to dump...
[attachment=1791]

And a nice picture of our aircraft in flight in the holding and during the fuel dump. Picture courtesy of HI ANG:biggrin::
[attachment=1792]

We are still at 15000 feet, but about to descend to 8000 for the approach to RWY 08L.
[attachment=1793]
[attachment=1794]
[attachment=1795]
[attachment=1796]
[attachment=1797]

Turning to final intercepting the Localizer for RWY 08L, but the ILS system failed as well as it was also flying off track, so we had to land manually.
[attachment=1798]

On final on path and on slope, but have a look at the NAV display...
[attachment=1799]

But we made it safely to the ground and taxied to the gate, where the last picture was taken...
[attachment=1800]

After a flying time of 1:53 and a block to block time of 2:10 we had about 49.4 tonnes of fuel left, meaning we had dumped about 73 tonnes of fuel.

This is not the flight I wanted to make, but it would have been ridiculous to continue to Beijing with the aircraft acting so strange.
Now I have to find the real fault. There seems to be an issue with the TRUE and MAG heading is FS9 at the moment.
The aircraft did the same on the return flight to Hilo later on.

The flight safety officer of TCA has launched an internal investigation on these incidents :biggrin:

Incident: Tradewind Caribbean B744 near Honolulu on July 26th 2010, NAV failure

A Tradewind Caribbean Boeing 747-400 registration, PJ-TYB performing flight TC-1040 from Hilo, Hawaii, to Beijing, China, was about 40 minutes into the flight when the crew declared PAN and decided to divert to Honolulu due to the failure of the NAV system. The aircraft descended, dumped fuel and landed safely on Honolulu's runway 08L at 04:04, about 1:55 after departure. A replacement B747-400 registration PJ-TYA has been dispatched to Honolulu to resume the flight as TC-9040 and currently is en-route and is expected to reach Beijing with a delay of 6 hours.

The incident aircraft has been checked by maintenance crews and a faulty IRS unit has been replaced. The aircraft subsequently made the ferry flight back to Hilo as flight TC-9940, as the same problem occurred again in flight, but the aircraft was able to continue to Hilo for a safe landing at Hilo's runway 26.

Hi guys.

Again we had a pleasant time flying together on another great Multiplayer Session. This time we would fly from Brunswick (KSUT) to Patuxent River (KHNK).
We first joined on the ramp at Brunswick and in the front to the right there is Vic and in some more distance you can see Stefaan parked on the ramp.
[attachment=1723]

Then at 17:15 UTC we started to taxi to RWY 23. Stefaan is already lined up, next departure will be Vic, who first taxied to the beginning of 23 and then set takeoff power, finally followed by me.
[attachment=1724]

Shortly after takeoff we were set up and followed the routing. I for the first time was Track IR inside a MP Session and it was really fun and I was easily able to maintain formation flying with Stefaan. At least I had to be 0.1 NM away from him, otherwise he would 'jump around', which would not be so funny. I had quite more problems following Vic as he started to 'jump around' a little bit earlier. I presume it must be some difference in the settings somewhere.

But now here are the pictures of the nice formation flying:
[attachment=1725]
[attachment=1726]
[attachment=1727]
[attachment=1728]

Well, Stefaan could be glad that he is friendly:biggrin:
[attachment=1729]

And some more formation flying with Stefaan.
[attachment=1730]
[attachment=1731]

Then I tried to stay in contact with Vic, but it was not really easy to maintain position for some reason...
[attachment=1732]

Some en-route pictures. during the flight the weather changed from time to time, but all in all the weather was fine for the flight.
Here you can see Vic and Stefaan in front of me.
[attachment=1733]

We left out some of the smaller airfields...
[attachment=1734]

...and made our first touch and go at Dare County Regl. Vic was first on his approach followed by Stefaan and finally me.
[attachment=1735]
[attachment=1736]
[attachment=1737]

I closed in to Stefaan by under half a mile during the final approach and tried to undershoot him after the touch and go, but he turned too early :cray:
[attachment=1738]

There is Vic once more.
[attachment=1739]

Stefaan is flying at a lower altitude.
[attachment=1740]

Then we finally arrived after another touch and go at Langley AFB at Patuxent River NAS.

Here we are finally lined up, uhh, on the ramp, if I believe Stefaan and Vic...
[attachment=1741]
[attachment=1742]

And again this was a very nice flight and i am surely looking forward to the next flights which will lead us sooner or later to Alaska. And there I definitely will need another aircraft. Maybe it will be time to dig out the Quest Kodiak again...

So guys, now have a good week and I hope Stefaan will post his pictures soon...:buba:

And again this was a very nice flight and i am surely looking forward to the next flights which will lead us sooner or later to Alaska. And there I definitely will need another aircraft. Maybe it will be time to dig out the Quest Kodiak again...

So guys, now have a good week and I hope Stefaan will post his pictures soon...:buba:

Hi guys.

Yesterday this was Tradewind Alaska's scheduled flight 25 from Boston to Seattle. This flight is originally flown by Alaska Airlines using B737-800. The flight should depart the gate at 12:00 Zulu, but for some reason they had a delay of nearly 4 hours. Take a look at the flight at FlightAware.
Nevertheless our flight was on schedule :biggrin:

Instead of taking the B738 I used the B757-200 from Captain Sim in Continental colors and a nice sound package for the RR engines.

Ok, we are parked at Gate A2 at Boston and being serviced by ground crews, cleaning personnel and catering service.
[attachment=1702]
[attachment=1703]

The cleaning is done and the cleaning personnel is leaving for another aircraft now.
[attachment=1704]

Next catering was done.
[attachment=1705]

Our V2: 157 knots and initial altitude 6000 feet. And we are being pushed back already leaving 2 minutes ahead of scheduled departure :biggrin:
[attachment=1706]

Tow truck is returning.
[attachment=1707]

Ground personnel is about to disconnect from intercom and walks to the left hand side back towards the gate. You can see him waving just in front of the high loader in the second picture.
[attachment=1708]
[attachment=1709]

Ready for departure lining up onto RWY 15R.
[attachment=1710]

We followed the LOGAN4 departure flying a heading of 120° until ATC vectored us back towards our original route, so it happened that we passed by Logan airport at almost 12000 feet already.
[attachment=1711]

The flight itself was calm with few traffic around us, but it happened that we saw a KC-135R from McConnell AFB heading towards RAF Mildenhall.
[attachment=1712]
[attachment=1713]

The remainder of the flight was as calm as the beginning of the flight and so it happened that we are already into our descend now on a GLASR7 arrival for an ILS 34C approach via PAE (the only offer by MSFS ATC and so I opted for that approach).
[attachment=1714]

We are crossing Boeing Field King County now and in front of us you can barely see another Boeing 767 from TCA in old livery, still flying the old schedule:music:
[attachment=1715]
[attachment=1716]

On final to RWY 34C
[attachment=1717]

Thirty, Twenty, Ten...
[attachment=1718]

Roll out:
[attachment=1719]

Well, I wanted to end the flight as soon as possible, so I forgot to take some pictures of our arrival at the gate (C20), as I couldn't await testing Track IR:biggrin:

I will add some pictures of arrival at the gate later today or maybe tomorrow.

Nevertheless our flying time was 5:24 and our block to block time 5:44, which means we were almost 30 minutes faster, according to the schedule, than the original flight. Not to mention that the original flight was late by about 4 hours:dash2:

It promissed to be a great evening for a short flight when we met our plane in front of the hangar at Concrete Muni (3W5).
I planned to visit a friend in Sedro Woolley, which is just 7 nm from Israel's Farm (WA56), a small private airfield along the Skagit River.

[attachment=1681]

We gotta get that engine crancked up... magneto's to both, fuel cut-off to open, throttle slightly open, primed her with two shots and let's handcranck that propeller.

[attachment=1682]

Soon after as the engine starts, she settles into a nice idle.

[attachment=1683]

Taxied to RWY 25 at Concrete and throttled her up for a smooth takeoff... she settled into a nice shallow climb.

[attachment=1684]

[attachment=1685]

[attachment=1686]

[attachment=1687]

Cruising at 1.000ft with open window and door to let the nice summer breeze inside... you can clearly see the North Cascades Highway (20).

[attachment=1688]

We followed the Skagit River further in Westerly direction and somewhere ahead there should be Israel's Farm.

[attachment=1689]

Besides the compass, no navigation aids in this cub... according to my intel, WA56 should be somewhere near those white hangars...

[attachment=1690]

And there it is, you can clearly see the runway with the airport sheds and hangars below the Cub.

[attachment=1691]

Went for a righthand circuit with a great view over the river when turning to final for a landing in roughly S SW direction.

[attachment=1692]

Aiming for that runway...

[attachment=1693]

followed by a smooth touchdown..

[attachment=1694]

[attachment=1695]

OK, let's go park the Cub..

[attachment=1696]

[attachment=1697]

We'll be enjoying a great sunset view... birds are singing...

[attachment=1698]

and finally we close'r up

[attachment=1699]

and we head off for a drink and dinner with a friend of mine at the Old Mill Restaurant

Hello fellow pilots.

Wow, that was an amazing nice flight yesterday once more. We had a very good day that day with lots of touch and goes and also some very good formation flying. Good thing about this all was that we all used aircraft that at least were flying with, or above 200 KIAS, which helped to keep the flying time low. We really could say that this MP Session went by like in flight :biggrin::dance3:
My flying time was 2:26 and the time for the others are almost the same.

I again used the Focke-Wulf FW190D9 in a 'Priller' paint scheme and now I am much more comfortable with the flying and especially the landing characteristics. Although landing with almost full fuel is still tricky :dash2:

But now here we go:
Pär was some distance out of Ormond Beach Airport in the water as he officially was using a Twin Otter with floats. Stefaan again was flying his Cessna Conquest and Viv his Beech Duke.

It happened that only Stefaan and myself are depicted in the picture now as Vic still hadn't logged in to the session.
[attachment=1637]

Taxi to the active runway 08:
[attachment=1638]
[attachment=1639]

Then it was time to depart and follow the coastline up to the North.
[attachment=1640]

I had just passed Pär in his 'slow' Twin Otter, which could need a little painting en-route...:biggrin:
[attachment=1641]

It happened as we made progress along the route. :runandhide:
[attachment=1642]
[attachment=1644]

I throttled back a little bit more to give Stefaan a good company
[attachment=1643]

Then Pär again.
[attachment=1645]

Followed by Vic.
[attachment=1646]
[attachment=1647]

Then came the approach to Hilton Head (KHXD) and I gave way to Stefaan and Vic first. Pär was doing a water landing somewhere outside the airport.
[attachment=1648]

Then we had to maneuver around some very tall radio antennas. Wasn't a big deal for pilots looking outside the window enjoying the really good scenery. Except for Pär who was looking up the route on the map and almost hit one of these antennas with his left wingtip. I don't tell you who created these flights...:rtfm:
[attachment=1649]
[attachment=1650]

Again a nice company flying along with Vic.
[attachment=1651]

After some nice formation flying with Vic there suddenly appeared another aircraft heading towards us. Who is it? Is it friendly or hostile?
Oh what a surprise it was Carsten! Glad you joined us on the MP Session although you were a little bit late as you came in as the show was almost over. But Carsten also didn't join us on Teamspeak. I hope everything is fine with you and your family.
[attachment=1652]
[attachment=1653]

We finally arrived at Brunswick (KSUT) and joined together on the ramp, whilst Carsten still was flying a little bit more around the scenery. Sorry mate, but you missed a perfect 'static display'.
[attachment=1654]

Wow, that was really a very nice flight and lots of fun.
The next flight will be on July 10!
I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did enjoy it and I hope to see you all again on Saturday July 10. It would be nice to see Carsten as well and be able to speak with you on Teamspeak as well.

That's all for now.

Ok, this MP Session was somehow a little bit different from the ones before, but I think we all had fun the one or other way:biggrin:

Stefaan is waiting for the FW-190D9 to taxi past him, whilst Pär is already airborne to see us depart. But obviously he wasn't quick enough to see the 'Red Baron' depart.
[attachment=1596]

Here I am buzzing Pär. For some reason he was very slowly today in his Quest Kodiak.
[attachment=1597]

Lining up for finals to Palm Beach (KPHK) behind Stefaan this time.
[attachment=1598]

There is Pär once more.
[attachment=1599]

There is Patrick AFB and i will come back for an approach to RWY 02.
[attachment=1600]

Next were the Shuttle launch pads and NASA obviously is getting a shuttle ready for departure into space...
[attachment=1601]
[attachment=1602]

Final approach to RWY 15 at the shuttle landing strip, which is rather long for the FW-190... In the background you already can see the Vehicle Assembly Building.
FreeFlow Florida seems to mess up thing a little bit. This part of Florida looks better in default scenery, but that are the compromise we have to make:cray:
[attachment=1604]

There is Stefaan and i am following him in for a final landing. Unfortunately landing this bird is not very easy if you do not see the runway from the cockpit. Might be easier in the original aircraft, but in the Simulator it is almost a pain. First landing resulted in a go-around...
[attachment=1605]

Ok, taxi in. Stefaan is already refueling his Conquest as he forgot to refuel it in Miami. I hope he didn't got here on the very last drop...
[attachment=1606]

Well, here we are at Ormond Beach and Pär also joined us at the ramp although he only could see one of us. Well it might be the very sophisticated stealth technology from WW2 era :biggrin::dance3::runandhide:

Ok, this MP Session was somehow a little bit different from the ones before, but I think we all had fun the one or other way:biggrin:

Stefaan is waiting for the FW-190D9 to taxi past him, whilst Pär is already airborne to see us depart. But obviously he wasn't quick enough to see the 'Red Baron' depart.
[attachment=1596]

Here I am buzzing Pär. For some reason he was very slowly today in his Quest Kodiak.
[attachment=1597]

Lining up for finals to Palm Beach (KPHK) behind Stefaan this time.
[attachment=1598]

There is Pär once more.
[attachment=1599]

There is Patrick AFB and i will come back for an approach to RWY 02.
[attachment=1600]

Next were the Shuttle launch pads and NASA obviously is getting a shuttle ready for departure into space...
[attachment=1601]
[attachment=1602]

Final approach to RWY 15 at the shuttle landing strip, which is rather long for the FW-190... In the background you already can see the Vehicle Assembly Building.

After a nice stay in Washington it was time to continue on to Rio De Janeiro. We arrived at Dulles Airport during the night time and the loading process was still in progress, but would end soon.
[attachment=1537]

After cockpit preparation was done the loading had ended as well and all cargo doors had been closed and so we could close the L1door as well and the stair was removed.
[attachment=1538]
[attachment=1539]

the push back truck is in position now and in a few moments we will be pushed back and the nose will be oriented to the right, so we can start our short taxi roll to RWY 19C.
[attachment=1540]

Line up onto RWY 19C and departure with a flaps-20 D-TO +35C° takeoff, with a V1 of 149, VR 166 and V2 178 knots on a STOIC2 departure and a DAILY transition.
[attachment=1541]

After an approximately flying time of 3 hours the sun started to rise over the Atlantic, with us traveling on airway L452 somewhere in the vast Caribbean.
[attachment=1542]
[attachment=1543]
[attachment=1544]

After about 8:15 it was time to descend towards Rio De Janeiro preparing for a NOAL arrival to RWY 28.
[attachment=1545]
[attachment=1546]

Turning to final for RWY 28 in Flight Level Change mode as we were a little bit too high and we had to descend more quickly.
[attachment=1547]

Prior touchdown a little bit to the right for an unknown reason as I was performing an auto-land. A GOL B737 has just departed the runway just in time - I was already preparing for a go-around:ashamed:
[attachment=1548]

Not much going on at SBGL and I wonder if this depicts the real situation...
[attachment=1549]
[attachment=1550]

There seems to be more going on at the military apron :biggrin:

Here we are after a flying time of 8:39 and a block to block time of 8:56.
L1 door open, Pax Stairs attached and the cargo doors opening including the big nose door.

And another MP Session went by on another Saturday with some great airports to pass by. Normally the first leg would have required a faster aircraft as the first airport was about 280 NM away from Cancun. My personal decision was it to take the Super King Air and throttle up to maximum. I thought by the time I would arrive at Playa Baracoa the other pilots would be ready to go. Damn was I wrong :biggrin: They almost hadn't have time to switch to the slower aircraft by then. :dance3: So it wasn't a touch and go, but a full stop to wait for Pär to get ready. Unfortunately Vic had to leave early, which only kept Pär Stefaan and me flying along, with later on Pär dropping out as well due to 'technical reasons':cray:
So Stefaan and me continued to Jardines Del Rey. But it is about time to show you some of the pictures.

Initial flight plan called for FL220, but we all climbed to FL240, and so here we go - ehem, fly.
Some cloudy weather en-route.
[attachment=1505]

Now we have some great weather...
[attachment=1506]

And again some scattered clouds...
[attachment=1507]

Then it was time to descend to Playa Baracoa - and it was a quick descend flying the Barbers pole :biggrin:
[attachment=1508]
[attachment=1509]

On final to RWY 02 and the guys are already there.
[attachment=1510]

Taxi to the ramp and on the right side you can see Pär, who already had switched to the Kodiak, whilst Stefaan also stayed in his Conquest.
[attachment=1511]

After the short stop it was time to move along and so we departed on RWY 02 again and climbed to 1500 feet this time. Unfortunately the visibility had decreased a little bit and it became hazy.
[attachment=1513]
[attachment=1514]

En-route to Varadero MUVR.
[attachment=1515]

And on short final to Varadero RWY 06 a little bit too low according to the PAPI...
[attachment=1516]

I think shortly thereafter Pär dropped out and so only Stefaan and me were left for the remainder of the Session.
[attachment=1517]
[attachment=1518]

And then there was another low approach, this time it was Las Brujas. For some reason I had forgotten that I had installed a very nice looking scenery. Although I had some big problems taking pictures I managed to take at least a few...
[attachment=1519]

Then we arrived at Jardines Del Rey and there again Stefaan and I had the same (beautiful) scenery installed.
[attachment=1520]

There we are next to each other on the ramp in front of the small terminal.
[attachment=1521]
[attachment=1522]
[attachment=1523]

Hopefully next weekend Pär has solved his problems and Vic will be able to join for some time longer, so we can complete the flight together and fly to Miami.

Until then have a great week and take care.
