Full Version: Running FS from a portable HD?

Don't know if anyone has any experience with this, but...

I bought a 120 gig USB powered portable HD, and was hoping to run FS off it while I am on the road (which is every week for work). However, I can't seem to get it to run. I keep getting CTDs and lockups and such. Is it possible to get this to work on my laptop? It ran fine on the laptop a couple years ago, but it was on the main HD then. I have a shootload of scenery and AI now, and the total space it needs is almost 80 gig (the laptop has a 60 gig HD).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
It might run, but it would be terribly slow.
And that performance might well cause your problems, FS not being able to load data fast enough over a USB cable causing it to lock up or crash.
That's been my problem. It's really slow. Would it be better if I put the main program on the HD, and just put all the scenery on the portable? Would that speed things up?
If it's mesh scenery, it won't do much.
If it's spot scenery (airports) it will work but you'll notice stuttering or slowdowns when approaching those airports.

Far better to add another internal disk, or make it an external SATA disk (rather than USB) :)
