If anyone has Milt Shupes Beech D18S, I need some operating help.

Manual use of Mixture controls call for leaning the engines to peak EGT, then back off a bit. I can't find an EGT gauge in the cockpit, so what is correct procedure? I've tried doing by listening to the engines, but always get a message that engine is losing power because mixture is too lean.

I really like the Shupe B18's and I also fly his Aerocommanders a lot. As for the EGT gauge, it isn't terribly accurate in FS. Some planes it appears pretty close but in others it's useless. As for the B18, I downloaded a utility called AFSD. I just tried the guys web page buts its gone. If you'd like it, I'll email it too you.

Anyway, this utility runs alongside FS. You start the sim with the plane you want, start AFSD, put FS in Windowed mode so you can resize the sim to be a little narrower than full screen. Put AFSD alongside the sim and click the 'fuel manager' from the drop down list of tools. Now you can go fly the sim and the utility will read out just what settings you have. You can fly at the recommended cruise altitude and then as you move the mixture back you'll see your mileage increase and the fuel flow slow down. When you have reached the ideal point everything is fine. If you go too far the mileage decreases, the plane slows, the engine falters just like the real thing.

For the Beech 18 at 10,000 ft, 30" manifold pressure, 2000 rpm, the mixture works out wonderful at 43%-45%. Higher altitude and you can lean a bit more but the Beech will top out at around 18,000 feet and 35% mixture.
