TAA 9856 LAX MSN - TCA2050 - 12-31-2010

Extra charter flight to pick up fans of the Wisconsin Badgers at Madison, WI (MSN).
I had already taken the Wisconsin Badgers team to LA on monday where they will compete the TCU Horn Frogs in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, January 1, 2011.
So I'll head out to Madision once more for an extra load of fans.

The A330-300 was still residing at gate 216 where I left it monday after dropping of the Wisconsin team

Flight preparation went smooth. The routing for today would give us:
DAG J100 SNY J114 ONL J148 MCW J16 SIBER

Nice weather at LA with nearly no clouds, the runway for us was given RW24L and we had programmed the LOOP5 departure that would take us to Daggett VOR.

.pdf   KLAX_LOOP5.pdf (Size: 463.44 KB / Downloads: 4)

The fuel load was per flightplan 57.260 lbs, and being relatively light our cruising altitude would be immediately FL390 for the whole flight... nicely cruising along at M.82.

At 1832Z we were off blocks and pushed back while being cleared to start the engines.
You can see engine 2 is already running, engine 1 is starting. Also notice the LOOP5 departure programmed.

Soon afterwards we were cleared to taxi to the active, in our case RW24L

... passing some docked colleagues along the way

Lined up on RW24L, all systems 'GO' and TO configuration OK... now we're asked to hold till the American 737 has crossed the runway

Cleared for take off and climbing out of LAX sitting in a nice winter sun...

Turning back towards the LAX VOR following the LOOP5 departure

and climbing out near Big Bear Lake in the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area

Closing in on DAG VOR; the endpoint of our departure, and meanwhile also nearing our cruising level at FL390 (see white arrow). From here on we'll be following our routing:
DAG J100 SNY J114 ONL J148 MCW J16 SIBER

Over LAS, Las Vegas, Nevada... you can see 'the Strip'

already well underway cruising along over Steamboat Springs (SBS)
The more we head east, the more clouds that appear...

Preparing for our arrival at MSN we checked out the METAR and found:

... the recipe for a good low visibility approach: 1/4 SM FG VV001... might be reason for a diversion but we TCA'pilots don't get scared easy :-)...

About 160nm from our top of descent, we've entered the approach parameters, amongst them the arrival runway assigned being RW36 via ILS.

.pdf   KMSN_ILD36.pdf (Size: 300.37 KB / Downloads: 4)

After SIBER intersection we will be vectored to the initial approach fix for the runway

Just past the TOD and on our way down into the 'peasoup'

We're ready for the approach phase and you can see the magenta circled D indicating where our Approach Phase will automatically start.
Hence being vectored we were redirected befor the D point so I activated the approach phase manually via the FMC.

Nice and sunny though above the cloud layers...

The approach itself used my full attention being very low visibility so no screenshot's here.
Nothing but 'white thick stuff' till getting around decision height.
Nevertheless, the ILS took us down to RW36 with confidence and we could start our rollout

Pretty foggy here, what we expected after reading the METAR.
We're clear of the active runway and we can start our taxi to our assigned gate

Arrived at the gate and all systems shut down, running on APU.
Blocks on at 2208Z, for a total Block to Block time of 3h 36'.
Total Fuel used: 36.290 lbs.

We're going to remain overnight here and will take a full house of fans over to LAX first flight in the morning
