Incident: TCA1040

Incident: Tradewind Caribbean B744 near Honolulu on July 26th 2010, NAV failure

A Tradewind Caribbean Boeing 747-400 registration, PJ-TYB performing flight TC-1040 from Hilo, Hawaii, to Beijing, China, was about 40 minutes into the flight when the crew declared PAN and decided to divert to Honolulu due to the failure of the NAV system. The aircraft descended, dumped fuel and landed safely on Honolulu's runway 08L at 04:04, about 1:55 after departure. A replacement B747-400 registration PJ-TYA has been dispatched to Honolulu to resume the flight as TC-9040 and currently is en-route and is expected to reach Beijing with a delay of 6 hours.

The incident aircraft has been checked by maintenance crews and a faulty IRS unit has been replaced. The aircraft subsequently made the ferry flight back to Hilo as flight TC-9940, as the same problem occurred again in flight, but the aircraft was able to continue to Hilo for a safe landing at Hilo's runway 26.
